SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Smoking in a car if there's a child under age 5 in it would be illegal under a bill already filed for the 2008 legislative session.

Official discussion of the bill sponsored by Senator Scott McCoy begins on Wednesday.

McCoy is a Democrat from Salt Lake City who says children are vulnerable to health problems and that the ban needs to be enacted. Opponents say the bill goes too far and infringes on personal rights.

A hearing on the bill will be held at the state Capitol.
