SARATOGA SPRINGS — Two men accused of stealing a statue depicting a woman who died in a 2007 gas explosion now face criminal charges.
Cameron Bacon, 20, and Jordan Martinsen, 19, have been charged with theft, a third-degree felony.
April Roper, 24, and Questar employee Larry Radford, 48, were killed in a fiery explosion at Roper's home in April 2007. After Roper's death, a bronze statue of the woman with her then-18-moth-old daughter was created and placed in Sunrise Meadow Park. Sometime between Oct. 12 and Oct. 19, the statue, which is valued at $4,000, was stolen.
Police announced they made two arrests after recovering the statue on Nov. 6. A girlfriend of a friend of one of the men apparently tipped off police.
Roper's family members and police indicated they don't believe the pair took the statue out of malice or knew about its meaning.
According to a police affidavit, Bacon admitted to taking the statue after being advised of his Miranda rights on Nov. 6. Both Bacon and Martinsen have court hearings scheduled for Nov. 21.
