KAYSVILLE — Three people were hospitalized Monday after an accident involving at least one vehicle and a commuter-rail train.

The FrontRunner train was running north between Old Mill Lane and 600 West when the collision occurred, Utah Transit Authority spokesman Gerry Carpenter said.

Originally, officials thought there may have been a two-vehicle crash prior to the collision with the train, but that was not the case.

"There was a second vehicle, but there was no one in it," Carpenter said. "That vehicle sustained some secondary damage from the collision, but the car (that was struck) was on the tracks and was obstructing the tracks when it was struck by the train."

Investigators were at the site working to determine why the car was on the tracks at the time of the accident.

"We've got conflicting stories on that from witnesses," Kaysville Police Capt. Brent Ward said. "We don't really know yet."

At least three people were injured, two in serious condition and one who was critically injured. A medical helicopter was called to the scene.

Ward said it was a mother and two children that were involved in the crash and that the 34-year-old woman sustained the most serious injuries. She remained in critical condition with a skull fracture Monday night, Ward said.

Carpenter said it appears that it was a mother and two children involved in the crash and that the adult sustained the more serious injuries.

A one-year-old who was transported to Primary Children's Hospital and a 5-year-old who was taken to McKay-Dee, were both expected to be released Monday night.

FrontRunner service in the area was shut down following the crash, and buses were utilized between the Layton and Farmington stations to transport passengers. There were approximately 120 passengers on the train, Carpenter said.
