Provo — BYU rolled over Idaho in Provo moving to 7-3 on the season with a 42-7 victory in Provo. Here are some impressions of the game.

Jake Heaps

Jake Heaps entered the game in the first quarter after Riley Nelson was taken off the field and played a good game. His deep throws were accurate and his timing with his receivers was excellent. Right before the half Heaps went into a hurry-up offense. Heaps looked great: he was composed and in control and looked like people expected him to at the beginning of the season.

One of Heaps' previous problems was locking on to the receiver; it seems he has made strides in this area. Idaho entered the game with a record of 2-7. It would be nice to see Heaps take on an opponent with a winning record; that is where a proper assessment could be made.

Nelson was taken to a local hospital for X-rays. It is rumored that he is being kept overnight and has suffered a broken rib. ESPN700 reported later in the evening that he suffered a small pneumothorax, "basically a collapsed lung," according to the article.

Opponents with losing records

The Cougars have dominated the opponents they have played from Idaho. BYU has had its share of easy games. It is really hard to make a proper judgment of BYU; they dominate weak opponents, and when they play a respectable team they seem to make just enough mistakes to give the game away. BYU appears to have had a great bye week but it would be interesting to see BYU play a team with a winning record when coming off a bye week.

BYU running game

The running game looked great. The ball was distributed to many running backs throughout the game. Michael Alisa led the way with 10 carries for 99 yards while many others contributed throughout the game.

Play calling

Offensive coordinator Brandon Doman has begun to balance the play book. It was nice to see Doman give Heaps the chance to throw some deep balls and hook up with many different receivers. Doman eased Heaps into the throwing game by giving him short, quick, high-percentage passes. Soon after, Heaps was throwing deep downfield and making it look easy.
