(KSL News) A congressional committee has denied a request to delay an investigation into the Crandall Canyon mine disaster.

The Department of Labor had asked the House Education and Labor Committee to put off hearings planned for October, saying it could "taint" the investigation being done by the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

However, the head of the committee said the hearings will be held as scheduled because the families of the miners killed deserve an "objective and independent review" of what happened.

Six miners died after a collapse in the Emery County mine last month. Three more men were killed trying to reach them.
