John Daley ReportingSalt Lake City police are charging a 15-year-old with attempted homicide after a fight broke out at the Gateway Mall late Friday night.
The victim in this case is a 12-year-old. The incident all started with an argument at the video arcade at the Gateway Mall.
Police say a 15-year-old was talking trash to the 12-year old victim and another 15-year old male when all three were in the video arcade at the Gateway Mall. The victim and his friend left the arcade and were going down the outdoor escalator when they came upon the 15-year-old, who was hiding a long metal landscape stake behind his back.
The friend fled back up the escalator. Police say the 15-year-old struck the victim in the ribs, knocking him to the ground and then struck him in the head, causing a severe cut to the forehead.
Det. Dwayne Baird, Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "Because of the seriousness of the injury, as well as the fact that this guy used a metal pipe, and according to witnesses it looked like this guy was out to do some serious bodily harm, and we've charged him with attempted murder."
The 12-year-old was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The 15-year-old was booked in Juvenile Detention for attempted criminal homicide.
No names have been released.
