An American study has concluded that the women who would benefit the most from a screening test for osteoporosis are the least likely to have it. Dr Joan M Neuner from the Medical College Of Wisconsin led a study into 44,000 women aged 66 and older. Forty per cent of white women in the US aged over 50 will break a bone as a result of osteoporosis. But the older the woman, the less likely she was to be screened. Among women 66 to 70, 27 per cent underwent the screening test, compared to less than 10 per cent of women aged 80 to 90. (GES/WNWR/JB)
