MIDVALE — Pipe bombs were recovered and a man arrested Saturday night during an FBI investigation into a series of bank robberies, officials said.
A bomb squad was called to 8254 S. Ivy Drive after explosives were found in the home's garage during an FBI search.
James Brent Milligan, 52, was arrested for investigation of aggravated robbery. Police say Milligan walked into Cypress Credit Union at 1381 W. 9000 South earlier Saturday. He was wearing a mask and had a handgun when he passed a note to a bank employee, informing the employee he was robbing the bank, police said.
Milligan made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, much of it tainted when a dye pack went off. He also left other items in the parking lot, which helped police track him down.
A relative who lives with Millligan said he was shocked to hear about the robberies, pipe bombs and arrest.
The man came home last night to find police and FBI agents surrounding the home.
"It looked like a circus," he said, "something you would see in the movies, not in real life."
West Jordan police say Milligan is being investigated in connection with three bank robberies, including an Oct. 1 incident at Wells Fargo, 2640 W. 90000 South, and a Sept. 7 robbery at University of Utah Credit Union, 8952 S. Redwood Road.
Officials say they found evidence of the robberies, along with pipe bombs, at Milligan's home.
Milligan's relative said he once saw a pipe bomb in the back of Milligan's truck, but Milligan told him it was fake.
"I got on him about it because of the fact you don't drive around with something like that in your vehicle," he said.
Milligan is being held in the Salt Lake County Jail.
