Something highly significant in Utah's election cycle will take place tomorrow evening throughout state.
Neighbors will gather in living rooms, or at schools, libraries or any number of locations to talk politics. They'll elect local party leaders, including delegates to party conventions who in turn will help select each party's slate of candidates for this year's elections.
In KSL's view, the local precinct meetings warrant widespread participation, especially by those who consider themselves to be mainstream sympathizers of their respective party philosophies.
Too often, political activists dominate the precinct meetings. It seems those who represent narrow special interest groups or espouse particular ideological views are more inclined to attend the meetings, sometimes at the beckoning of organizations with specific agendas. There's nothing wrong with that. It's the way the system is currently organized. Still, it's worrisome that the views of Utah's mainstream moderate majority aren't always heard or represented.
It's why KSL encourages broad participation in tomorrow's precinct meetings. Get involved! Honestly express your feelings! Perhaps seek election as a convention delegate. At the very least, listen and vote for those who share your views. Become part of this significant grassroots process that plays such a fundamental role in Utah politics.
