Mar. 15--A major new Mary Zimmerman adaptation of the popular mythic tale of "Jason and the Argonauts" headlines the 2006-07 season at the Lookingglass Theatre.

Titled "Argonautika," the new Zimmerman production will mark her first entirely new work at Lookingglass in about 10 years. David Caitlin, Lookingglass artistic director, said that the company plans an environmental staging.

"The audience will feel," Caitlin said, "like they are sitting in the bow of a ship."

Although rooted in Greek (and Roman) mythology, the tale is best known to most people as the subject of Don Chaffey's 1963 movie, famous for its use of stop-motion animation.

Aimed at family audiences, Zimmerman's version will play an extended run at the Water Tower Water Works from October though the holiday season.

In February, Lookingglass will produce the Midwest premiere of Glen Berger's "The Wooden Breeks," a language-oriented drama that already has played in New York. Heidi Stillman directs.

In April, Lookingglass will produce the world premiere of "Black Diamond," a new work about women rebel fighters in Liberia. It's the work of actress and artistic associate J. Nicole Brooks.

The season ends with a reprise of Lookingglass' hit family show "Lookingglass Alice," expected to play throughout next summer.
