SALT LAKE CITY — A 20-year-old Magna man was charged with possession of illegal drugs and a gun that he shouldn't have, after both were found inside of a safe he asked his father to open.

The man needed cash from inside the safe in order to bail himself out of an adult detention center. According to documents filed in 3rd District Court on Monday, he called his dad to retrieve the money. When the father opened the safe and found marijuana and Lortab pills, as well as a hand gun, he called police.

The man is charged with possession of drugs and intent to distribute, as well as possession of a firearm as a restricted person, all third-degree felonies.

He is being held in jail and was at the detention facility because he failed to comply with the terms of probation on pleas of abeyance entered for a 2009 vehicular burglary and possession of alcohol by a minor.
