SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Officials of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints say they will hold an October groundbreaking ceremony at the site of a new temple in Payson.
The church says the public ceremony will be held Oct. 8 at 9 a.m.
Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the faith's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will preside over the event.
The Payson temple will be the 15th temple either operating or planned in Utah.
Church officials say the temple will serve about 78,000 church members living in the area between Spanish Fork and Nephi. Those temple-going members have been driving to Provo or Manti for temple services.
Temples are considered sacred to Latter-day Saints and are used for religious rituals including proxy baptisms and marriage ceremonies.
