SALT LAKE -- A giraffe was stillborn early Monday morning at Hogle Zoo, zoo officials announced Tuesday.

It was 9-year-old Pogo's first pregnancy. Hogle Zoo received Pogo in 2005, at age 3.

The baby giraffe's father, Riley, has been with the zoo since 2004 and has fathered three calves.

Zoo staff had checked on Pogo early Monday and had seen nothing to cause concern. When they returned a short time later, the baby was unmoving beside the mother. Veterinary staff assessed that the animal had been stillborn, which a necropsy later confirmed.

No complications for the mother resulted from the stillbirth.

Hogle Zoo has displayed giraffes since 1969, with 15 successful giraffe births during that time.
