Beginning Friday, March 3rd with the noon news, KSL Television will begin broadcasting our newscasts in 14 x 9 on our analog channel. These numbers describe the width and height ratio of the picture, and will slightly change the image that you are used to seeing. Instead of seeing our news in the traditional 4 x 3 aspect ratio, which is almost square in shape, you will see a picture that is more rectangular.

What are those black bars?

This new format is commonly referred to as letterbox, with a "gap" at the top and bottom of the image, resulting in black bars. It is only slightly noticeable and most of us are already familiar with this format, which is often used on DVD movie releases.

KSL Television has been the leader in offering our newscasts in 16 x 9 widescreen for several years now. Until now however, this experience has only been available to those viewers with digital sets. This new format will provide all of our viewers with the broader, more complete picture that has been enjoyed by digital viewers. We are excited to offer this new viewing experience to our viewers, especially as we begin to make a complete digital transition by 2009.
