The blood splattered sheets only tell part of the story.

Lt. Rick Findlay, Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "It was a pretty dramatic fight that occurred here, we're taking it very seriously."

Investigators say the live-in boyfriend shot his 30 year-old girlfriend in her armpit. Not only did she survive but amazingly managed to run almost a block south to Ardmore Street. At an apartment building there, she found an acquaintance who called police.

Jim Richardson was there.

Jim Richardson, Tenant Who Saw Victim: "It's amazing she didn't bleed to death. It was a mess. She was sitting in the corner coherent, but from here down, covered in blood."

It's possible the victim fought back. Police say they found a knife at the scene.

Lt. Rick Findlay, Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "The scene the way it is now gives us suspicions that the other half may also be injured."

So the shooter may be hurt too. Police are still looking for him.

Lt. Rick Findlay, Salt Lake City Police: "That's our first concern, to make sure there isn't another victim out there. But then also, there is an individual and a handgun outstanding, and we need to locate those, talk to him, and see what his side of the story is."

Neighbors say police have been there before for domestic problems between the two. They say they were fighting just the other day,

Neighbor: "He's got his hand on his waistband. I said, 'He's got a gun.' I told her, 'He's got a gun.' I've never seen him, but he made the motion to reach for a weapon. It was inevitable."

Police are working with a teenager who lives at the home to get more information.

Neighbors say they're seeing more domestic fights involving drugs all the time.

"We try to get people to help clean us clean up the community, but no one wants to get involved," one says.

Officers are still trying to determine who and where the gunman is. Detectives say it hasn't been easy with an un-cooperative victim.
