Legendary Spanish tenor Placido Domingo will stay on as general director of the Washington National Opera through 2011, the opera company said Friday, just days after he renewed his term as head of the Los Angeles Opera.
"I feel very proud to lead this company, and I am happy that we will be spending more time together," said Domingo, 65, who joined the Washington opera as artistic director in 1996 and has served as its general director since 2003.
In October 2004 he ruled out the possibility of leading New York's renowned Metropolitan Opera, saying he had other obligations and it was simply not the right time.
Domingo joined the Los Angeles Opera in 1986 and was named general director in 2003. He renewed his contract there, also through 2011, on Wednesday.
A renowned singer and conductor, Domingo has taken on more than 122 roles -- more than any other tenor in history -- and has earned nine Grammy Awards and two Latin Grammies during his long and storied career.
