Deanie Wimmer ReportingInternet Porn has found yet another way into a growing number of Utah homes. If you or your kids download music, games or videos, there could be a lot more on your computer than you realize. Here are some tips in our ongoing effort to help you stay safe.
Like most 14-year olds, Ian La'ulu likes to download free programs.
Ian La'ulu: "I usually play games, music."
But when he clicked on something disguised as a game, he got the shock of his life.
Ian La'ulu, 14 years old: "Turned off the computer, didn't tell my dad until a week later."
Genice La'ulu, Mom: "There was porn on ours."
This type of file sharing on the internet is a growing concern and a growing focus for law enforcement as pedophiles share and spread material. Teams with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force struggle to find the resources to keep up. They hope parents will heed the warning.
Chris Ahearn, Section Chief, Internet Crimes Task Force: "They may be turning a blind eye just simply because they think the kids are sharing music and pretty much doing something non-offensive."
This mother says computer use in their house is changing.
Genice La'ulu, Mom: "We've decided we're going to move the computer upstairs closer to the family so we can monitor it."
That's a great strategy. Filters don't work in this case, unless you shut off access to the internet, so supervision is really key.
