Sandra Yi ReportingStudent: "They just came on the intercom and were like, 'this isn't a drill, this is a lockdown, everybody lock your doors,' and that's all we heard."
Teachers and students endured tense moments at Lehi High School, when a gun scare forced the school into lockdown. Police say no one was hurt and no shots were fired today in Lehi.
Officers are now talking to the student who caused the commotion. Police say the gun was family-owned. Her dad brought her to the police station. Authorities still aren't sure why she brought the gun to school, but when they found out she did, the school went into lockdown.
Violet Bundy broke down when she found her sister waiting in front of the school.
Violet Bundy, Student: "I'm just glad to be out."
Violet, a senior, expressed relief after the two hour lockdown sparked by reports that a fellow student brought a gun to school. Police say the girl showed the gun to a friend and threatened to hurt herself.
Investigators found the weapon, a loaded 45 caliber handgun, at a Lehi home. A friend, who Eyewitness News chose not to identify, told us the girl was upset after a breakup.
Friend: "I feared for her sake. I didn't think she had any intention of using it on me."
Violet Bundy: "So stupid and immature and irresponsible to endanger the lives of the rest of us."
Students say rumors were swirling, but they were kept in the dark about what was really happening.
Amy Greenwood, Student: "I didn't really feel like we were in danger or anything, so I wasn't really too worried about it."
Nick Roberts: "You don't think it's gonna happen at your school, but it's like a realization that it could happen anywhere."
At the same time, concerned parents anxiously waited for any word from their kids. Many were able to reach them by cell phone. Some were angry after learning the lockdown wasn't just a drill.
Tiffanie Brownlee, Parent: "That's my child, and if she's in danger, then I need to know about it."
Desiree Conley, Parent: "I'm upset, I'm scared, I just wanna see my daughter come out safe."
A spokesperson for the Alpine School District wanted to apologize to parents who were told this was just a drill. The school, she says, often has unannounced drills similar to the incident today, and people working the phones this afternoon thought it was just that. The district will be notifying parents today and tomorrow.
As for the girl who allegedly brought the gun to school, she could face suspension, as well as criminal charges.
