PLEASANT GROVE — Police were investigating two attempted carjackings Sunday that happened minutes apart and are believed to be connected.

Just after 9 a.m., a man approached another man standing outside his car near 1136 W. Spencer Road, said Pleasant Grove police detective Jordan McNaughton.

The carjacker pointed a gun at the man and told him he was taking his vehicle. The car was found abandoned behind a grocery store a short time later. Police did not say if anything was missing from inside the vehicle.

Witnesses reported seeing a white vehicle picking up the alleged carjacker after he got out of the car, McNaughton said.

A few minutes after the first incident, police received reports of another attempted carjacking near 24 Street and 800 East.

A man got in a vehicle, pointed a gun at the driver and told the driver to get out, McNaughton said. For reasons that were not immediately clear, the man was unable to take the vehicle.

He got out of the car, fired two shots in the air, and was picked up by a getaway vehicle that was described as a white Subaru with Colorado license plates. Witnesses were able to get a partial plate number of "346."

It was not known if the getaway car used in the first car-jacking was the same as the one in the second incident. In each incident, McNaughton said there were two people in the getaway vehicle picking up the third person.

The alleged carjacker in the first incident was described as a white man between 18 to 25 years old with black curly hair, a slender build and reportedly "very tan." He was last seen wearing a plaid Fedora hat, Aviator sunglasses, an orange Hawaiian shirt and green cargo shorts.

The man in the second incident was also a white man between 18 to 25 years old with long "messy" brownish-red hair. The only description police received of what he was last wearing was a black shirt and pants.
