Shelley Osterloh reportingCasey FitzRandolph, the 2002 gold medalist , likely skated his last race tonight.
Casey had a great race, but not fast enough to land on the podium. But two Americans did.
Shani Davis became the first African-American man to claim an individual gold medal in Winter Olympic history. 23-year-old Shani Davis says even as a kid growing up in on the Southside of Chicago, he always joked that someday he would win a gold medal in the 1000 meter race -- and he did. Perhaps vindicating himself for declining to compete in the men's team pursuit.
Shani Davis, Gold Medalist: "This is more for me and for my mom for all the people who believed in me and thought that I could do it. This medal's for them.
For the first time since 1952, American skaters took gold and silver. Joey Cheek adds that to the gold he took in the 500, and bronze from 2002.
Joey Cheek Silver Medalist: "Its a huge honor. I was thrilled I skated the best I possibly could today and Shani was the best guy, and I was happy it was the us in one and two.
Chad Hedrick, who it appears has a growing rivalry with Davis, ended up in sixth. Hedrick won gold in the longer 5000 meter race and had only skated the 1000 meter a half dozen times. His best events are still ahead.
Chad Hedrick, US Speedskater: "The two remaining races I have the world record in both of them, so get ready for a lot of Chad Hedrick here soon.
But its over for three time Olympian Casey FitzRandolph who finished in 9th. Though disappointed, he said he was pleased to be part of such a strong US Team.
Casey FitzRandolph, US Speedskater: "Such diverse back grounds and training programs and everything, kind of motley crew but certainly a successful one.
So Hedrick and Davis each have one gold medal and they'll face off again Tuesday in the 1500m -- an event Davis ruled until Hedrick snatched away the world record.
