FARMINGTON -- Crews are working this morning to contain a fire burning in Farmington's Rudd Canyon. Three people started the fire while shooting targets Wednesday evening and face charges in connection with it.

Crews worked until about midnight, then 10 firefighters slept on the mountain. The fire is about 30 percent contained, mostly on the west side. It has burned between 15 and 20 acres and is a half mile from any homes.

Resident Dena Scoville said, "It's always scary because Farmington is your home. But I think they're on top of it and I have confidence they'll take care of it."

Crews will focus on the north, east, and south flanks. They expect a challenge Thursday morning from the wind, which is known to kick up in Rudd Canyon.

The three people were shooting in Rudd Canyon Wednesday night, exploding targets, when the fire started. They called 911 to report what happened. When crews arrived, the three people were taken into custody based on what they reported to police and based on information from witnesses.

Sgt. Susan Poulsen of the Davis County Sheriff's Office said, "They have been cooperative. It would have made it worse if they tried to run and avoid confrontation with law enforcement. But they did do something that was reckless, and at this point it's putting people in danger."

The three have been summoned on charges of shooting in an illegal area and reckless burning.
