Today's practice was only minutes old when Bronco called the players together and asked Markell Staffieri what day it was. Markell told him, "Thursday," at which point, Bronco said something along the lines of, "well... I must have made a mistake in our schedule, because I have us watching a movie in the team room at 10:30." And with that, today's practice was cancelled, the players had an unexpected day off, and they ran, whooping and hollering all the way to the lockerroom.

Bronco took a day off from interviews (I think he had to go make popcorn), but I did catch up with Bryan Kehl (who would have preferred to practice, actually), Jan Jorgensen and Corby Hodgkiss to get their thoughts on a different kind of "film work."

Hodgkiss also talked about stepping into the new starter's role at Katback in place of an injured David Tafuna. For Hodgkiss' interview, along with those of Kehl, Jorgensen and a "Question of the Day" for Ben Criddle, listen to today's "Cougar Daily Download."

The Cougars do plan to hold a brief walk-through this afternoon, ahead of the annual "Cougar Kickoff," set for 6:00pm at the field west of the Indoor Practice Facility (Haws Field).

Bronco is not unfamiliar with "surprise" tactics. Last year, the final practice of camp was cancelled in favor of a tubing trip down the Provo River, and the nightly team activities are usually fairly well-kept secrets. Of course, one of the more important and impactful "surprises" was when Bronco outlined his plan to hold weekly firesides during the football season--something that has had a lasting effect on the direction of the football program.

A scout for the New York Jets was in attendance. Unless he had a stopwatch on the players as they ran back to the lockerroom, I'm not sure he got much out of this morning's session. He might want to book another night in Provo and come back tomorrow.

*******

Another day of two-a-days is on tap for tomorrow, with the 10:00am session once again open to the public. It is the second-to-last such open session of camp, with the final public practice coming up Monday morning.
