(KSL News) -- The new Catholic Archbishop of San Francisco, a familiar face to Utahns, was ordained Wednesday afternoon.
The former Bishop George Niederauer, head of the Salt Lake Diocese for 11 years, received the appointment from the Vatican last December.
He will now oversee the welfare of more than 400 thousand Catholics in Northern California. He told them today he will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor and close friend.
The Most Rev. George Niederauer, new Archbishop of San Francisco: "Certainly, I intend to continue Archbishop Leveda's dedication to the healing of the victims of sexual abuse and the strengthening of safe environment programs throughout the Archdiocese..."
Archbishop Niederauer also hopes to work together with leaders of other faiths as he did in Utah.
