MONTREAL (CP) - The first major showing of artist Anselm Kiefer's work in North America in 20 years - and the first ever in Canada - is at the Musee d'art contemporain until April 11.
Anselm Kiefer: Heaven - Earth, which opened Feb. 11, includes about 40 pieces created between 1969 and 2005.
The German-born Kiefer, currently based in Barjac, France, is considered one of the most important contemporary artists and is known for works that are "gigantic, monumental, colossal," says the museum.
The exhibit includes six-metre-long paintings, sculptures made of lead, and other works that use symbolic materials such as clay, ash, gold leaf, seeds and dried plants.
"It ponders a civilization in search of spirituality but grappling with the weight of its human condition, beyond cultures and religions," says the museum.
A lead sculpture titled Book With Wings is "uplifting with its wings, yet earthbound with its thousands of kilograms of weight."
