EPHRAIM — Music professors from a prestigious music school in New York are in Utah this week to teach students at a camp, focused on Jazz music. It's an unlikely collaboration between The Juilliard School and one of the smallest colleges in Utah.

In classrooms at Snow College in Ephraim, you will find some of the rising performers of Jazz music.

"Some of these kids here from Utah are extra talented. They just need some artistic direction to guide them. -James Burton III, Snow College

"You realize there is talent everywhere, and some of these kids here from Utah are extra talented. They just need some artistic direction to guide them, to help them succeed," said James Burton III, director of jazz studies at Snow College.

Burton, himself a Juilliard graduate, now leads the jazz studies program at Snow College. For the past seven years, Snow and Juilliard have worked together, focusing on jazz for up-and-coming musicians.

"Not only are we here during the summer for camp, we are out here during various times of the academic year bringing faculty members here and students here performing," said Carl Allen, director of jazz studies at Juilliard.

"I'm from New York; and even in New York I wish I had something like this growing up as a kid," Burton said. "Out of all of the camps I went to as a kid, I never had anything like this."

While the jazz workshop is in rural Utah, students from all over the world gather in Ephraim to participate in the camp.

This is the second year in a row Fabiana Lauf has traveled to the camp from Germany. "It was a great experience playing with these musicians and learning from all the teachers from Juilliard and from Snow College; and yeah, I wanted to come back," she said.

Andrew Wangemann has been involved in the music camp the past four years, and this fall will be the first Snow College student to transfer to The Juilliard School. "It brings new perspectives and helps one understand what it is going to take for me to succeed as a jazz musician."

You too have the chance to enjoy that music. The Juilliard faculty will perform together during a Jazz concert Saturday, July 16, at Snow College.
