Samantha Hayes ReportingSalt Lake City and Torino have been working closely together ever since the Italian city was named an Olympic host. Today dignitaries from both countries made the connection official, with a sister city resolution. Also, there was an interesting meeting between Salt Lake City and Olympic officials.
That was this morning. I asked Lane Beatty from the Chamber of Commerce if it was possible for Salt Lake City to host the Olympics a second time. He said it's not only a possibility, but they are actively working on it.
This time it's Torino's turn.
And while the Passion Lives Here, the memories of the 2002 Games are still burning brightly in the eyes of Olympic officials.
Rocky Anderson, SLC Mayor: "As one IOC member said to me in Salt Lake City, if there was one city they had to settle on to host the Winter Olympic Games, it would be Salt Lake City, because we have it all."
Salt Lake City and Torino are sister cities, connected by the spirit of the Olympics.
Rocky Anderson, SLC Mayor: "I can't help but say I wish we were back there four years ago. I hope we can do it again."
Speaking of doing it again, Salt Lake City met with the USOC to discuss that possibility of hosting again in the future.
"Not just perhaps. We are actively working on it. We think we need to move forward on it. It takes about 12 years It's a process to get an Olympic games."
And the response about a possible bid was reportedly very positive.
"We are in the preliminary stage and you will see more work coming out in a year or two that will just move us along much further in that area."
So stay tuned for that.
Meantime, things are really getting going. We just returned for a ceremony in the medals plaza for gold medalist Chad Hedrick. It's quite a party. More on that next time we see you.
