This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
How many children do you know who love to play in the dirt? But once they get older, most of them tend to find other activities. Not Jessica Hadfield. She's passionate about plants, soil and landscaping and this can be clearly seen in the designs she creates for her Salt Lake City-based business, Dig Landscape Design.
Jessica has found a niche in the landscaping business. She provides landscape consultations with suggestions on what plants would work well in someone's yard. This is a four-phase process and includes conceptual design, detailed design, installation and follow-up care.
Once Jessica provides her suggestions, the client can either subcontract the actual installation out or do it themselves, with Jessica supervising the whole process. She follows up for the entire first year after the design is implemented to make sure it's working out. This makes it possible for more people to afford her services.
Of course she's seen many people interested in creating water-wise landscapes in the last few years. But another major trend is for her clients to incorporate edible plants into their landscape design. This allows someone to use pockets of space in their yard to grow their own food, especially if they don't have a garden. Food purchased or grown locally is often fresher and has better taste as well as keeps money here in our local economy, up to $6 for every dollar spent on Utah products.
Jessica also tapped into Utah's thriving gardening industry by offering consultations on vegetable gardens. She can advise on what types of plants will do best in your garden or suggest herbs you might like to grow based upon your soil type and content.
Dig Landscape Design has become a huge word of mouth business. This speaks well of both Jessica's talent and quality of work. Studies have shown that 90 percent of online consumers trust recommendations from people they know and 7 in 10 people who read reviews will share them with friends, family and colleagues. She plans to continue growing Dig Landscape Design at a controlled pace.
