Prosecutors say Gabriel Perez-Guiterez, 26, was speeding and driving under the influence when he rear-ended a vehicle stopped at a red light, then ran away and hid in a window well.
Jonathan Bowers, the driver of the stopped vehicle, died from injuries he sustained in the collision at the intersection of 6200 South and 4015 West.
Perez-Guiterez was allegedly traveling 75 mph in a 40 mph speed zone when he struck Bowers' vehicle. According to charges filed in 3rd District Court, he made no attempt to brake or avoid the collision and had a blood-alcohol content of .11. The legal limit in Utah is .08.
Perez-Guiterez also had marijuana in his system, the charges state.
After the accident, he ran off, jumped a fence, and was later found by police hiding in a window well, according to the charges.
Perez-Guiterez was charged with automobile homicide, a second-degree felony; leaving the scene of an accident involving death, a third-degree felony; two counts of DUI, a class A misdemeanor; driving with a measurable controlled substance in the body, a class B misdemeanor; and class C misdemeanor counts of driving on a suspended license and speeding.
