SALT LAKE CITY -- A suspected drunk driver slammed his car into a fire hydrant, which sent a geyser shooting into the air.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. Monday at 1700 East and 2100 South.

The 20-year-old driver apparently lost control of his car, which went onto the curb, rolled, hit the hydrant and snapped it off. According to firefighters, the hydrant spilled 1,200 gallons of water per minute for more than an hour.

Police said alcohol and speed could have been factors, but they're still investigating.

The city will decide how much it will charge the driver for destruction of city property.
