SALT LAKE CITY -- A shining pink firetruck rolled up to the City & County building Friday morning, covered in signatures and encouraging words from those who have been affected by cancer.
Mayor Ralph Becker recently signed a resolution declaring June 10 "Cares Enough to Wear Pink Day" in Salt Lake, to encourage awareness and support. The color was in full force among the firefighters and police in attendance at the morning's event.
"We are here to help support the 'Pink Heals' tour," said Capt. Bob Silverthorn of the Salt Lake City Fire Department. "It's cancer awareness and survivorship."
The tour, started by Arizona firefighter Dave Graybill, seeks to raise awareness and money for those diagnosed with cancer, as well as survivors.
Civil servants, supporters and survivors gathered and shared a pancake meal provided by International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1645, as well as Zumba lessons and haircuts for hair donations.
Ubiquitous pink shirts, also from Local 1645, were available for for a small donation.
"Everybody has a part in it," said Detective Mike Hamideh of the SLCPD. "A Diagnosis with cancer is definitely a scary thing, there's no doubt about it. There's never a reason to give up the fight."
The "Pink Heals" tour will head to American Fork, West Jordan and Park City in coming days.
