PROVO -- Hundreds gathered at BYU's bookstore Saturday morning to take part in the kick-off festivities of the Utah Festival of Books.

The event was intended to help children learn more about literacy and the importance of reading throughout the summer.

KSL's Nadine Wimmer hosted the event, joining Utah's American Idol David Archuleta. Other attendees included New York Times best-selling authors James Dasher, Ally Condie, Kiersten White and Brandon Mull.

Elementary school students were invited to sign up for the Read Today program to report their summer reading progress to claim prizes at the end-of-summer festival at the University of Utah Sept. 10.
