SALT LAKE CITY — A 17-year-old boy is in trouble with the law for apparently convincing his father that he had been kidnapped in order to avoid going home.

The boy was with his 18-year-old girlfriend Monday about 11:40 p.m. and didn't want to follow his dad's orders to go home, according to Salt Lake police. So instead, he sent an anonymous text message to his father saying that he had been kidnapped and that his father would never see him again, a police report states.

Officers contacted the girlfriend who denied the boy was there. The boy, fearing his girlfriend would get in trouble for lying to police, contacted his father again, according to the report.

When police went back to the girlfriend's house, the boy claimed he had been kidnapped but now was back.

Detectives determined the kidnapping was a hoax. There was no immediate word on possible charges.
