SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Doctors would be required to inform women seeking an abortion that their fetus may experience pain during the procedure, under a bill passed by the House today.
The bill would also require physicians to provide pain medication for the fetus if the mother wants it administered. The bill would apply to abortions performed at 20 weeks or later.
The bill passed the House with a vote of 62-to-eight.
Representative Carol Moss tried to amend the bill to remove the requirement that the state health department produce a pamphlet about fetal pain.
The Salt Lake City Democrats says she can't find any agreement in the medical community about whether a fetus really experiences pain at that stage of gestation. The bill now goes to a Senate committee for consideration.
