Sam Penrod Reporting Lehi police square off with a gunman who was a former officer in their department.

"We saw cops running across the intersection with guns drawn."

The shootout shook up a Lehi neighborhood this morning. Police traded shots with the gunman and ended up wounding him. It was a chaotic scene when at least ten gunshots were fired right in a neighborhood.

It all started as a domestic dispute, when the gunman began chasing his ex-wife and her boyfriend. He rammed their car and shot the boyfriend before firing at police. Both people shot today are still in the hospital. Everyone, including Lehi Police officers, was very shaken up.

From bullet holes in vehicles, shell casings on the ground, a handgun, rifle and ammunition belts in the street, you get an idea of what a scary situation it was in Lehi this morning.

Brandon Smith, Witness: "I heard the sirens and three cop cars pull up here, they all reached for their guns and went running down the road. And then I heard like ten gunshots."

Other neighbors saw police fire at the suspect.

Art, Witness: "We heard them say, 'Stay down, stay down, drop your weapon and don't reach for it.'"

Lehi Police say that one of their former officers, Art Henderson, was the gunman and that he fired a rifle at them.

Sgt. Darren Paul, Lehi Police Dept: "He shot at the officers. You can see this vehicle was hit in the windshield and a civilian vehicle right across the way over there."

When Henderson opened fire, his former colleagues were forced to shoot back at him. One bullet struck him in the leg. He was taken by ground ambulance to the hospital.

The boyfriend, Craig Tremble, was shot by Henderson and taken to the hospital by LifeFlight.

Sgt. Darren Paul: "He is going to be fine, he has a shot in the leg and abdomen area but he is going to be fine."

For neighbors, it was a terrifying few minutes. Andrea Frederic saw police shooting from her front window.

Andrea Frederic: "It was a little disturbing to wake up to something like that. We just bought our house a couple of months ago and we don't feel as safe, I have to say, after this happened."

And police are just glad that such a violent situation ended without anyone being killed or critically injured.

Sgt. Darren Paul: "We're fortunate no one was injured and no civilians injured, so we feel lucky that way."

Police say Henderson was fired from the Lehi Department 18 months ago, after he was criminally charged for simple assault. He was suppose to be in court on Monday in that assault case. Now he'll be there facing attempted murder charges. Henderson was booked into the Utah County jail tonight.
