Carole Mikita ReportingLDS church President Gordon B. Hinckley is still in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery. Well wishes are coming into headquarters for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including one from a very special friend.
Newsman Mike Wallace and President Hinckley have been friends over the years. Last July, Wallace participated in birthday celebrations for President Hinckley; today he is sending a personal 'get well soon'.
Mike Wallace, '60 Minutes': "I don't know whether you know or not, but he's a good friend of mine, a man I admire and I love really, because he's just an extraordinary guy."
CBS Newsman, Mike Wallace, talked about President Gordon B. Hinckley with KSL Newsradio's Grant and Amanda. He said he last saw him at his 95th birthday celebration in July.
They first met 10 years ago for a '60 Minutes' profile, something Wallace says he had wanted to do for years and President Hinckley agreed to readily, undaunted by Wallace's reputation. As a reporter, Wallace says, meeting the president was one of his most memorable experiences.
Mike Wallace: "And sure enough, it was as though we became friends, instant friends, and we have been friends ever since."
Wallace just heard about President Hinckley's surgery. He says he is concerned and hopes for a speedy and full recovery.
Mike Wallace: "I send a message of respect, of love, of friendship and admiration. And darn it, get well and back on your feet quick."
It's something millions of Latter-day Saints around the world are, no doubt, hoping. The latest word we have is that President Hinckley is recovering and resting comfortably.
