Carole Mikita ReportingPresident Gordon B. Hinckley is resting comfortably following surgery yesterday to remove a cancerous growth from his intestine.
Volunteers are not even confirming that President Hinckley is at LDS Hospital, for those who call and wish to send cards or flowers, but we are told a heartwarming number of well-wishes have been coming into headquarters for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by e-mail, cards, notes and phone calls hoping for his quick recovery.
Ninety-five-year-old President Hinckley has been church leader for 10 years now and is described as immensely popular with members of his faith, and those of other faiths as well. We spoke with some people near Temple Square this afternoon.
Jenny Bowman, Salt Lake City: "My husband went through something like this over a year ago and I know how long it takes to get over it. We've got our prayers going for him every minute."
Sister Kathy Williams, Church Missionsary: "He's in our prayers all day, all night."
Elder Ronald Williams, Church Missionary: "They tell us it's ok, he had a nice recovery of that surgery and everything was fine."
Rod Core, Farmington: "We are members of the church and feel deeply about the prophet, so we hope things work out."
President Hinckley will likely remain in the hospital for a few more days. A church statement today said that not only is he resting comfortably but he is expected to resume his normal duties soon.
