SPRINGVILLE -- Chopper 5 delivered an early Easter treat for some dedicated readers.
More than a quarter of the students at Reagan Academy, a Springville charter school, read 100 minutes last week. They took our Read Today challenge and logged their minutes on the website.
The school's director decided to keep the real occasion secret. He told students they were practicing a fire drill. But that story lost steam when the helicopter landed and a festive bunny made a grand exit.
"Amazing," said student Abigail Smith. "I didn't expect it at all. It was awesome."
For their efforts, the Easter Bunny delivered a basket of coupons to Carl's Jr. burgers for the entire school.
Teachers say this event reinforces their efforts. " We just kept trying to motivate them, getting them to go home and read," said teacher Laural Fox. "(We're) just trying to encourage them how much fun reading really is."
The next challenge -- the 100 students who read the most get a coupon for a free book up to $25 from Deseret Book. Register at Readtoday.com so your children can qualify.
