PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Trent Plaisted scored 17 points and had eight rebounds to lead BYU to an 80-67 victory over Wyoming Wednesday night.
Brandon Ewing hit a shot for Wyoming (10-8, 3-2 Mountain West) at the buzzer to end the first half and put the Cowboys in front 38-36.
Plaisted made a lay up to begin the second half, followed by a dunk by Lee Cummard that began a 20-3 Cougar surge. Keena Young's three-point play with 11:09 left capped the run and put BYU (10-5, 2-2) up 56-41.
Wyoming cut the lead to 63-55 with 3:53 remaining before Justin Williams left the game with a turned ankle. At the time, Williams had 21 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
The Cowboys came within 66-59 with 2:21 left, but could not pull any closer.
BYU scored 18 of its final 20 points from the free-throw line.
Wyoming shot 52 percent in the first half, but were held to 26 percent in the second, including 0-10 from behind the 3-point arc.
BYU, shooting 68 percent from the free-throw line on the year, was 19-21 in the second half.
Ewing scored 21 for the Cowboys, while Steve Leven added 12.
The Cougars had five players in double figures. Young scored 16, and Cummard, Austin Ainge and Brock Reichner scored 13, 12, and 10 respectively.
Ainge made his second start of the season, but his first at point guard, replacing Rashaun Broadus, who was suspended for the game due to a violation of team rules.
