SALT LAKE CITY -- Police are looking for a man who pulled up next to another vehicle on California Avenue Sunday and shot the man inside.
According to Salt Lake City Police Lt. Isaac Atencio, the 25-year-old victim was driving between 900 West and 1200 West shortly after 2 p.m. when another man pulled alongside him, fired two rounds inside the vehicle and took off.
Ethan Jones witnessed the shooting.
"I was just walking home from church and two cars sped by," he said. "I hear gunshots and I just jumped behind the guy's driveway and that was about it."
The victim -- who was hit by at least one bullet in the upper torso -- called 911 and his girlfriend to say he'd been shot, Atencio said. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and then transported to the hospital before police were able to get much information from him.
Atencio said it doesn't appear the shooting was gang related, but did say it was not random. He said the victim is a security guard at several local nightclubs and investigators are looking into the possibility that the shooting could be connected to a recent incident at work.
"It's very dangerous when you have something like this because you have innocent bystanders that could get hit by stray bullets," Atencio said.
Police say the victim -- whom they have not identified -- was in stable condition awaiting surgery Sunday night.
The suspect was driving a tan or gold Jeep Cherokee at the time of the shooting. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to give them a call at 801-799-3000.
