SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s Scouting for Food drive, the single largest one-day food drive sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, will take place Saturday, March 26.

Beginning at 9 a.m., thousands of Scouts throughout the state will gather food to support needs of the Utah Food Bank and other local food pantries. Millions of pounds of food will be collected in just a few hours.

Residents are asked to put commercially packaged, non-perishable food items outside their front doors by 9 a.m. Products low in sodium/sugar/corn syrup are appreciated. Perishable food and food packaged in glass cannot be accepted.

In addition to Utah Food Bank and the United Way, the Utah National Guard is providing personnel and equipment support for the annual event.

This will be the 24th consecutive year the Guard has participated. Approximately 100 airmen and soldiers and more than 20 Utah National Guard vehicles will help Boy Scouts from the Trapper Trails, Great Salt Lake and Utah National Parks councils who will go house to house to gather donated food items for local food banks.

Guard members will be overseeing drop-off locations at the Ogden, Spanish Fork and Springville armories and will assist in transporting food items from these and other locations to the Ogden, Salt Lake and Provo community warehouses.

"Helping those in need in our state is our primary mission, and it is an honor to partner with the Boy Scouts in this worthy cause," said Utah Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Hank McIntire.
