PROVO, Utah (AP) -- A senior scientist and head of the Research Group at Pixar Animation Studios will give the keynote address at a Brigham Young University math conference.
BYU says Tony DeRose will speak on the vital role of math in animated filmmaking on March 18 at the Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics conference.
DeRose, who has worked for Pixar as a senior scientist since 1996, says advances in computer technology, computational physics, geometry, and approximation theory has revolutionized the animation industry.
DeRose received a Scientific and Technical Academy Award for his research on surface representations that are now used in animation.
He previously taught computer science at the University of Washington.
The conference will bring together students and researchers from more than 20 schools to promote undergraduate research in mathematics.
