COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS -- Unified Fire crews put out a house fire in Cottonwood Heights this morning.
The homeowner and his son noticed smoke in their house and called 911 around 3:30 a.m. When crews arrived at the house near 7400 South and 1995 East, they discovered heavy smoke coming from the basement.
Capt. Cliff Burningham with the Unified Fire Authority explained, "We did have one firefighter who had his foot go through the floor, so we knew we had an issue with structural integrity in this home. At that point we backed the crews out."
Firefighters checked the basement through a window and found the fire in a subfloor of the house. They extinguished the flames and were mopping up hot spots around 7 a.m.
No one was injured in the fire but one of three dogs inside the home perished.
No word yet on what caused the fire.
