BANGKOK, Jan 4, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A 21-year-old student from Cardiff, Wales, found dead on a beach in Thailand, may have been raped before she died, Thai police say.
Police say Katherine Horton died after being hit with a blunt instrument and left to drown off the island of Koh Samui, reports The BBC. She was last seen talking on her cell phone Sunday evening.
"Our investigation is focusing on rape," a police spokesman said. Authorities have ordered DNA testing on those who had met the woman.
The third-year psychology student flew to Thailand on Dec. 27 with university friends for a short break. She had been due to return home next week, the report said.
Police say at some point, Horton must have wandered from her group as she spoke to her family on her cell phone. Her body was found less than 12 hours later in the sea by a water biker.
