Amanda Butterfield ReportingThis holiday season was good to Utah Ski resorts. Just about every resort is reporting a deep snow base, record bookings, and boarders and skiers who can hardly wipe the grins from their faces.
It's hard to believe all the snow in the mountains, when here in the valley there's nothing. We couldn't find snow off the side of the road anywhere. But go just a few miles up, and all anyone is talking about is snow.
Adam Diamond: "Oh it was great! Beautiful day beautiful day."
Mark Galvin, Skier: "The snow is phenomenal."
Josh Weinberg: "It was amazing."
Brandy and Lachelle, Snowboarders: "We're blessed to live in Utah, we are very lucky to enjoy this every day, gotta love it."
No one wanted to leave the mountains today.
Mark Galivan: "Unfortunately they're closing the lifts, so we'll go eat and rest for tomorrow and be out again."
According to Ski Utah, resorts are 120 percent above the average snow fall for this time of year. Take Alta, with five feet of snow since December 26th. The Canyons have received four feet since the 28th. And bookings everywhere are up 5 to 30 percent from last year, and last year was record breaking.
Hilary Reiter, Ski Utah: "We were really treated to some holiday storms; it was a really great way to ring in the new year."
Here's more good news if you live here.
Hilary Reiter, Ski Utah: "This is a great time for locals to go skiing, because the resorts are a little bit quieter with all the holiday visitors gone."
So all of this, can be yours.
Brandy: "The snow is so fluffy, and there's parts no one has even touched, you sort of shhh, it's so nice."
KSL reported several search and rescue operations over the holiday weekend.
Nash Nordin, Rescued Snowboarder: "'Question: What did you learn from it?' Never to go into the back country again."
And with all this snow, there's really no need to go into the back country.
Mark Galivan: "We managed to find our powder stashes."
Ask anyone here, if you don't get up to the mountains soon, you're missing out.
Dave Fields, Snowbird: "This is why you live in Utah; it's the best thing Utah has to offer."
Ski or not, hopefully all of this snow is getting you pumped for the Olympics. Deer Valley is hosting a World Cup event for free style aerials and moguls the 13th and 14th; it's your last chance to see the best in the world before they head to the Torino.
