SALT LAKE CITY — A man is facing possible kidnapping charges after a standoff in Salt Lake City. Investigators say he held a woman against her will in his apartment when they found him.
Corrections officials had a $25,000 warrant for Jery Miles, who is supposed to be supervised by Adult Probation and Parole officers, but he disappeared. They got word he was in a Salt Lake City apartment complex near 300 East and Downington.
When officers arrived around 6:15 p.m. Monday, they saw Miles and his roommate outside.
Department of Corrections Public Information Officer Steve Gehrke said, "As they approached, one of them ran up the stairs, ran inside one of the units and closed himself inside."
Gehrke said Miles' roommate's girlfriend was still inside, and for about two hours, he wouldn't let her out.
The standoff ended about 8:30 p.m. when the woman opened the door and came out, Gehrke said. Miles complied with officers and was taken to the county jail.
Miles was originally arrested for theft, and kidnapping is not his usual crime.
"That's obviously taking it to a new level," Gehrke said.
Along with the possible kidnapping charge, Miles also had a theft warrant out issued by UHP.
