SALT LAKE CITY — A West Valley man who pleaded guilty to murdering his ex-girlfriend was sentenced to prison Monday.

Salvador Alejandro Landin-Castanon, 29, was ordered by 3rd District Judge Robert Faust to serve 15 years to life in prison for murder, a first-degree felony, in connection with the August shooting death of his former girlfriend, Maria Tolentino. The man had also been charged with discharge of a firearm with serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony, and possession or use of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony, but those charges were dropped in exchange for the man's plea.
Landin-Castanon was charged after he gunned down his ex-girlfriend outside of the Sun River Apartments at 1080 W. 3300 South and shot her three times, prosecutors say.
Police responded to a call and found the victim unconscious with a gunshot wound to the head and two in her torso. She was rushed to a local hospital but died in surgery.
Nearby residents who knew the 36-year-old victim said Landin-Castanon was angry she planned to go out with another man. According to charging documents, the couple dated for one year, but had broken up five months before the shooting.
