Courtney OrtonA shooting at an apartment complex in South Salt Lake early this morning leaves one man dead.
Police don't know exactly what happened at the Mountain Shadows Apartments on 3800 South 700 West, but they believe it started as a fight.
Police say 20-year-old Aaron Wheelwright was shot three times, and then ran to a nearby road, where he was picked up by his girlfriend and taken to the hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A neighbor told police he heard gunshots and spotted some clothing and other items on the sidewalk.
Capt. Tracy Tingey, with the South Salt Lake Police Department, said, "We determined we had a blood trail, as well as shell casings, expended shell casings, and clothing."
People in this neighborhood are surprised that something like this could happen where they live. Resident Brandon Hemmert said, "It's a really safe neighborhood, I feel fine. I don't feel uncomfortable around here; it's usually really safe."
Some residents are not only surprised, they are scared. One resident said, "I'm kinda nervous about living here now." Another resident, Pat Fisher, said, "It's time for me to leave town, I'm out of here. I've got a baby and kids; this isn't safe anymore."
Seven people inside the apartment were taken into custody, four adults and three juveniles. Police say all seven are considered persons of interest.
