MIDVALE — A man who was found bound, gagged and critically injured in a Midvale Motel 6 has since recanted his story, police said.
The 21-year-old man was discovered on Jan. 13 in a room at the Motel 6 near 7200 S. Catalpa Road after a maid heard screaming coming from the room. He had been tied up, gagged and had a belt around his neck when police arrived.
"The facts that he alleged were unfounded," Midvale police detective Isaac Pace said. "The man recanted."
The man originally told police he had been kidnapped before being taken to the motel, where he was tied up, said Midvale Police Sgt. Torin Chambers.
"He had fabricated that story," Chambers said, noting that the man had been "in very critical condition" when he was found, but has since recovered.
He declined to provide additional details. Officers are not planning on filing charges in connection with the case.
The man's wife reported him missing the night before he was found and was convinced that he had been abducted. She told police her husband had been involved with some kind of a confrontation with some men in December.
The man's injuries were so severe he was, at one point, placed in a medically-induced coma.
A man was kidnapped from the same Motel 6 on Jan. 7 and taken to a remote area in Grantsville. According to a police report, the kidnappers said they were going to kill him for his testimony against a man who attempted to run over a police officer in October.
The man was able to escape and get help from a nearby resident.
Police have said there is no connection between the two incidents.
