SALT LAKE CITY -- Two students were taken into custody for bringing loaded guns to school in two separate incidents - one in Los Angeles, Calif., and one in Saratoga Springs, Utah.

Two 15-year-old students were injured in the first case, which happened Tuesday at Gardena High School in Los Angeles. A 17-year-old student brought a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol to school in his backpack.

"The person that's responsible for this particular shooting came into a classroom, it appears set a backpack down on a desk and a gun that was inside that backpack discharged. The round from that gun hit both of the students," said Dep. Chief Pat Gannon of the Los Angeles Police Department.

One of the victims is in critical condition; the other is in fair condition.

Teacher Heather Buchta said, "It's just really unfortunate because the majority of our kids, they're amazing kids. It's a very small percentage that, unfortunately, set the stereotypes for our school."

In Saratoga Springs, the Daily Herald reports a 17-year-old student was arrested Tuesday after bringing a loaded semi-automatic handgun to Westlake High School, located at 299 W. Thunder Blvd.

Police received an anonymous tip about the student with the gun, then located him, confiscated the gun, and took him to a juvenile detention facility.

The paper says when police asked why he brought the gun to school, he responded, "it might be fun."

Police say the student kept the gun concealed at school. He could face multiple charges.
