A recent KSL editorial urging caution in mandating stiff mandatory minimum prison sentences for sex predators that target children drew mixed reaction from you, our viewers and listeners.

Korilynn Cheatham of Draper expressed outrage at what she viewed as KSL’s “. . . indifference and dampening of pleas for stricter laws and security for our children.”

Isn’t passing laws to keep sexual offenders from victimizing more children the least we can do?”

George Nuttall of Orem seemed to concur:

“Far too many young boys and girls have been brutalized by sex predators that should have been locked away. These abusers need to be kept off the streets and out of our neighborhoods.”

However, KSL also heard from Carolyn Ferguson, the Executive Director of an organization called SOhopeful International, Inc, which shares KSL’s view:

“The movement towards mandatory minimum (sentences) will most certainly decrease something, but it is not what the authors intended – it will most certainly decrease the reporting of intra-familial sexual abuse! This is a recipe for disaster in that neither the child-victim nor the offender will be getting the help that they need.”

As always, a more complete text of these replies can be found on our website by following the Editorial link at www.ksl.com.
